This is our most popular half day ride for the larger four and six seat UTV’s and is considered to be one of the Top 10 Most Scenic Off-Road Routes in Utah.
This entire area is the exposed & eroded results of the largest Volcanic Gravity Slides that Geologists have ever located & studied! Massive Volcanic Lahars created the mountain range you are riding in on this route. There were numerous Volcanic Eruptions and Seismic Events over the 10 Million Year Period between 19-29MYA that triggered a multitude of these massive Land Slides (aka Gravity Slides). Millions of years of Continental Uplift and Erosion shaped the Rugged and Spectacular Canyons and Mountains we ride in today.
You’ll ascend via Volcanic Limekiln Canyon and continue through upper Hancock Canyon to a high altitude ridge line.
As Hancock Canyon ascends to this Ridge, the Peterson Point spur trail 697 is on the riders right. This intersection is a great Vista Point- Look Back to the North through the Canyons and Mountains you’ve just ascended. Observe the Pyramid shaped Blind Spring Mountain directly to the North; and the colorful eroded peaks north and east of your position leading up to it.
After turning right on 697 riders pass the width restricted Barney Cove / Casto Canyon turn off on their left. 4 & 6 Seat UTV’s stay Right and continue 2 3/4 miles further West to Peterson Point, the spectacular Panoramic 360 degree overlook at 8200’. Here you’ll find great views in all directions and an excellent overlook of Casto Cayon to the South. Look due East to the Large and most prominant feature of Casto Bluff. This bluff marks the end of the ancient fast moving Volcanic Lahars that flowed North to South millions of years ago creating the Dutton Mountain range (aka The Sevier Plateau) where you are riding.
The 2 3/4 Miles of spur trail 697 to Peterson Point has multiple scenic vistas of upper Hancock Canyon, the Dutton Mountain range, Lime Kiln canyon, Blind Spring mountain and the mile wide Hancock peak as you head to Peterson Point.
